Course Description

This course is designed to provide training for attendees to become familiar with various aspects of common medical emergencies that can occur in a dental office.  This course will provide information about the pathophysiology, avoidance, and management of various medical emergencies.  Practitioners are encouraged to involve their whole team in this training.  This course is intended and designed to benefit the whole team in a dental setting, including the practitioners and various clinical and administrative staff.

Learner Outcomes

Upon course completion, the participant will:

  • Understand the pathophysiology of the most common medical emergencies in a dental setting.
  • Understand and identify and demonstrate how to manage the most common medical emergencies in a dental setting.
  • Understand and identify patients most at risk for medical emergencies.
  • Understand and discuss a plan for management of medical emergencies in one’s practice.

Presenter

Mehran Hossaini, DMD

Dr. Hossani is a Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Medicine and Surgery at Temple University School of Dentistry.  He obtained his dental degree from the Oregon Health Sciences University, and completed his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York.  His clinical expertise includes maxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction, dental implantology, and outpatient anesthesia. He is an active full-time educator and clinician.  His areas of interest include curriculum development for various levels of learners, outcome assessment, and integration of technology in education.  Dr. Hossaini is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He maintains an active practice at Temple University School of Dentistry and lectures on the state, national and international levels.
