Course Description

This course will cover multiple pertinent topics for the General Practitioner that already sees pediatric patients or for the practitioner who wants to see more pediatric patients, but you don’t know what you don’t know. This course will be presented in a logical, step-by-step sequence from the initial exam to the restorative procedure.  The dentistry is routine, the difference is it has to be done on a child.  New insights into child psychology will help you to apply current behavior guidance techniques with an emphasis on treating common Special Healthcare Needs (SHCN) patients.  The most recent protocols and techniques for sealants as well as nitrous will be presented and as an added bonus, the ever-increasing prevalence of MIH along with its diagnosis and treatment will be presented.  Identify and assess the Pediatric patient with Sleep Apnea.  At the conclusion of the lecture the learner will feel confident in increasing the pediatric portion of their practice in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of dental procedures.

 

Learner Outcomes

Upon course completion, the participant will:

  • Understand the sequence of eruption of primary teeth by the end of the lecture.
  • Understand and detect eruption problems on a panorex ny the end of the lecture.
  • Understand the new behavior guidance techniques based on new psychological insights in Pediatric Dentistry by the end of the lecture.
  • Understand and know how to properly handle patients with SHCN by the end of the lecture.
  • Understand and know the techniques and indications of when and why to take dental radiographs by the end of the lecture.
  • Understand and list the components of a proper medical history by the end of the lecture.
  • Understand and learn the steps for doing a proper Pediatric Dental exam and Orthodontic analysis by the end of the lecture.
  • Understand, name and describe the 3 characteristics of some of the most common Special Healthcare Needs patients and that SHCN relationship to dental care by the end of the lecture.
  • Understand name and explain 3 features of MIH teeth and how to treat patients with MIH teeth by the end of the lecture.

Presenter:

Dr. Lance Kisby

Dr. Kisby is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.  After completing his Residency in Pediatric Dentistry at Floating Hospital at New England Medical Center in Boston, MA, Dr. Kisby was Chief of Pediatric Dentistry and Assistant Director of Dentistry at R.I. Hospital in Providence, RI.  He then went on to spend 17 years in private practice in Massachusetts until he accepted the position of Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT.  He has been Board Certified in Pediatric Dentistry since 1983, was a former Contributing editor to the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, he has multiple publications, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as well as a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Kisby had created two Pediatric Dental Residencies, one in Danville, PA and the second in Wilmington, DE, where he was Program director of both programs.  He is currently the staff Pediatric Dentist at the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Lac du Flambeau, WI with the IHS.  Dr. Kisby has over 45 years of clinical and teaching experience thus bringing new and exciting techniques and insights to those dentists and staff who treat children.
