AOTI001 - Advanced Online Teaching Institute
Course Description
AOTI is an asynchronous, actively-facilitated course designed for moderately and highly experienced online instructors who want to evaluate and improve an existing online course. We will use the three Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles of Engagement, Representation, and Action & Expression alongside an evidence-based peer feedback process to reflect on and improve our courses. Participants identify barriers to learning, redesign one piece of their course (typically, a target module in Canvas), and develop an improvement plan for their course as a whole. Throughout the AOTI, you will engage in critical self-reflection, exchange meaningful feedback with peers, and commit to continual improvement of teaching practices to meet students' evolving needs.
The June cohort is being offered as a summer intensive that will take place over two weeks, rather than the usual four. The course features collaborative activities, with the expectation of more frequent engagement over a shorter time span equaling about eight to ten hours of total time commitment per week. Participants who successfully complete the course gain a microcredential from Credly attesting to their commitment to online teaching and learning.
Topics covered include: Creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments; collaboration techniques for active learning; designing effective multimedia; generative AI in online learning; and creating equitable and robust learning assessments.
