Course Description

Scams do not discriminate. Anyone can fall victim to a scam given the right conditions. It is essential for protective services workers to understand why people succumb to scams and what can be done to address this fast-growing issue.

Course Outline

REGISTRATION

  • This course is for older adults protective services (OAPS) and adult protective services (APS) staff and is not available to the public.
  • Individual online registration is required for each person.
  • There is a limited number of registrations available per training.

DETAILS 

To receive Protective Services credit hours, participants are required to:  

  • Participate in the live training (via Zoom)
  • Cameras are required during this training. Cameras are to be on and positioned so the presenters can see the participants' full faces on the screen.
  • Certificates will be issued for Protective Services enrichment hours after the course concludes.
  • Partial certificates for missing any portion are not available.

The Zoom Waiting Room will open 30 minutes before the start of training.
*Participants should log in early to ensure Wi-Fi connectivity and attendance.

 

SCHEDULE 

  • *8:30 AM - 9:00 AM: Log into the Zoom waiting room for attendance
  • 9:00 AM: Training Starts Promptly
  • 4:00 PM Training ends
  • Short breaks will be provided approximately every hour
  • Lunch break will be one hour

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will have the ability to:

  1. Recognize the characteristics of popular scams.
  2. Explain the common tactics used by scammers.
  3. Describe the psychology behind why people fall victim to scams.
  4. Apply the information learned to make determinations on incapacity and imminent risk in protective services cases involving scams.
  5. Describe practical interviewing techniques to use with victims of scams.

Notes

SOCIAL WORK CONTINUING EDUCATION (optional)

This training has been approved for 6 continuing education hours by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy the requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal. 

  • The Social Work Continuing Education fee is $20.00. See below for the online payment link.

To obtain Social Work CE Credit, please complete the following items:

  4. Complete the Course Evaluation after attending
