Certificate Description

This certificate will provide a foundation for understanding race in a United States context and its role in sport and leadership. With this increased knowledge, individuals will be able to lead from a racially conscious perspective and positively impact their respective athletic organizations/communities.  

Learner Outcomes

Certificate Learning Objectives

• By the end of the course, participants will be able to exhibit an increased awareness of self and position within their respective athletic/educational environments. • By the end of the course, participants will be able to exhibit an understanding of definitions and identify racialized underpinnings within sport and recreation. • By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify practices, policies, and daily actions that perpetuate racial inequity in sport and recreation. • By the end of the course, participants will be able to develop a personalized leadership philosophy with heightened racial consciousness. • By the end of the course, participants will be able to construct plans to positively impact their athletic community through evidence-informed practices. • By the end of the course, participants will be able to recognize how sport and recreation organizations, leaders, groups, and individuals can use strategies to create racially-inclusive and equitable environments.

Certificate Material

• No required textbook. • Readings, videos, and other resources will be assigned and included within the course delivery platform.  

Certificate Assessments

• Reflections – The reflection assessments are designed to gauge the participant’s understanding and application of Certificate concepts. These assessments are included in each module and require participants to think critically about themselves, perceptions, and current events within their lives and sport organizations. • Activities/Worksheets – These assessments are completed on pre-created worksheets that are available through the online platform. They guide participants throughout specific activities to a final product to assess their development in understanding and applying concepts discussed throughout the Certificate program. • Leadership Manual – The Race-Conscious Leadership Manual is the final assessment for the Certificate program. The Manual consists of multiple components that combine all concepts discussed throughout each module and provide the opportunity for participants to create a working document that they can use in their professional journeys.
