Course Description

This survey of Roman History begins with the foundation of Rome in the 8th century B.C. and ends with the founding of the Christian capital of the Empire at Constantinople. Students will read a narrative history, a study of various aspects of Roman society and culture, and a selection of the ancient sources upon which our knowledge is based. Archaeological material will be used to augment the literary sources. The influence of Rome on later Western Civilization in government and law will be studied as well as its role in determining the foundation of Christianity.

Thank you for registering for a Senior Scholars course! The Senior Scholars program is an auditing program for Temple graduates, as well as their spouses or partners, and other friends of Temple, age 50+. As an auditor, you will not receive a grade or academic credit for this course.

This course will be meeting T, TH from 3:30-4:45pm on Temple University's main campus from Monday, August 24, 2026 through Monday, December 7, 2026 in Mazur Hall, Room 342. 

Please note: classes are not held on Friday, October 9th (Fall Wellness Day) or during Fall break: November 23-27, 2026.
