Course Description

Group Instruction in Pre-Band Brass & Wind Instruments
The Brass & Wind Project at Temple University (BWP) serves students, grades 3rd-5th, interested in learning the musical skills essential to playing a band instrument. In weekly large and small group classes, fundamental skills will be taught, allowing the student to thrive in a low-pressure and supportive environment. Skills taught include:
- Body awareness skills: breathing, blowing, posture and how to properly hold an instrument.
- Executive & technical: embouchure formation, finger control & dexterity, and basic tone production.
- Musicianship skills: singing, playing, moving, improvising, creating music of all kinds, and reading music notation alone and with others.
The skills learned will prepare them for participation in a traditional Band program and allow them to transition to playing a full-sized band instrument with relative ease.
No prior experience with instrumental music is required. Students are taught by a Master Teacher and supported by Temple University undergraduate music education and performance instrumental interns.
Grades: 3rd - 5th
Instruments: A variety of simple, beginner friendly plastic instruments designed with the young musician in mind will be provided while the student is registered in the program. These instruments are designed to precede study of flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and other brass/wind instruments.
