Course Description

Spend a day in the Ambler Arboretum with Scientific Illustrator, Gretchen Halpert. Sketching from life and learning techniques for capturing the beauty and atmosphere of the gardens, participants will explore the big picture to the smallest detail and include written text alongside their drawings. This workshop begins with a discussion and demonstration of tools, tricks, media, and techniques. Specific exercises, free drawing time, and sharing of our work round out this full day of drawing.

 

Notes

Suggested Materials List (to bring with you):

  • Sketchbook (or single sheets of paper on a clipboard). Whatever size you are comfortable with. The paper should be able to take dry and slightly wet media.
  • Large elastic bands or clips to keep pages from turning in a breeze
  • Pencils- HB. You may also like to have harder (3H or 2H) and a softer (B or 2B) leads.
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Eraser
  • Black fine top markers-pilot razor point (water soluble) and Pigma Micron or Copic waterproof (size 005 and 0)
  • Colored pencils- 6-8 colors, including a blue, red, yellow and green
  • Watercolors-small travel set. Pan colors as opposed to tubes. A cheap plastic
  • children’s set is fine. Include blue, red, yellow pigments.
  • Decent quality watercolor brushes-size 4 with a good point works well.
  • Water container with lid
  • Cotton rag or paper towel
  • Hand lens
  • Portable stool if you don’t want to stand outside or sit in the grass
  • Appropriate clothing, hat, drinking water, sunscreen, bug spray, bag lunch……
  • A knapsack or tote bag

About the Instructor: Gretchen Kai Halpert earned a BA in Botany from Connecticut College, studied biological illustration at the University of New Haven Graduate School and received a certificate in Scientific and Technical Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)/CE in 1986. Halpert has taught natural science illustration for RISD/CE, Brown University, Wheaton College and a variety of botanical and nature organizations locally, nationally and abroad since 1994. Her drawings have appeared in books, journals and scientific publications, at zoos and nature preserves. Halpert is past president of The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI, Inc.) and a member of the ASBA and NESBA. She is the owner of the Scientific Illustration Distance Program.
