The Academy Experience at Temple

Accredited by the Municipal Police Officers’ Training and Education Commission (MPOETC) of Pennsylvania, Temple University’s Police Academy maintains high academic and physical fitness standards and has a mandatory attendance policy.  Temple’s academy is a full-time, twenty-two week experience, which meets Monday through Friday from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Enrollment is generally limited to thirty students in each class. This year, as in years past, we are seeking the best and brightest candidates.

Basic Eligibility

Below are some basic eligibility requirements to be considered for admission. Please do not wait to submit your application.  It should be submitted prior to obtaining any of the required documents.

  • Submit acceptable criminal history and driving history
  • Provide proof of completion of high school (copy of diploma or transcripts)
  • Complete a medical and psychological exam
  • Submit a drug screen
  • Submit one reference
  • Submit copy of your driver’s license
  • Submit copy of DD 214 if applicable
  • Pass a standardized reading test (applicants must be able to read at a 9th grade reading level or higher)
  • Pass the physical fitness entrance test
  • At least 20 years old at time of application
  • High school diploma or GED
  • US Citizen
  • NO disqualifying criminal convictions (Misdemeanor 2 or higher)
    • Must submit acceptable criminal history report
  • Licensed driver
    • Must submit acceptable driving history
  • Physical examination
  • Drug test
  • Vision test
  • Hearing exam
  • Psychological exam (MMPI-2, MMPI-2RF, and MMPI-3 are all acceptable)
  • Physical Fitness Assessment - administered by academy
  • Standardized Reading Test - administered by academy (must demonstrate a 9th grade reading level)  

Costing Information

  • Academy tuition: $6,000 (excluding application fee). Uniforms are an additional expense (approximately $400-$600).
  • Flexible payment options-applicants can pay by credit card, debit card, personal check or money order.
  • Traditional student financial aid is not eligible for this program.
  • The academy does not offer a payment plan at this time.
