Course Description

What is a Global Immersion?

Global Immersions are short study trips embedded into an international business-oriented course that allow students a chance to experience global business in person rather than simply learning about it in the classroom. The Fox Global Immersions are meant to expose students to the environment of business by taking them to targeted destinations that offer a robust and profound practical experience. They will engage in a number of learning opportunities, including meeting with business executives in the destination country, touring factories, interacting with government officials and learning about the business environment from locals. In addition, students will have opportunities to learn about the location through tours of key sites and service learning projects organized by lead faculty members with experience in those destinations. Students return with a new perspective on business, innovation, and the global marketplace.

Most undergraduate global immersion experiences are embedded in the 3-credit IB 2509* course, unless indicated otherwise. Your instructor for that course will be the same faculty member leading the immersion experience, providing the added benefit of in-depth preparation prior to departure as well as valuable insights while on the immersion. Students should register for the course associated with the immersion experience of interest.

As part of the Fall 2019 IB2509 3-credit course, the Fox International Programs office will be offering a short-term global immersion to Bulgaria and Czech Republic taught by Professor Tony Seeton. The focus of this immersion will be two starkly different post-communist capitals of eastern Europe, Sofia, Bulgaria, and Prague, Czech Republic. Both nations emerged from communism at approximately the same time (1989), with each experiencing varying levels of economic and social progress as they moved from a traditional command economy to the free market system of the EU. Each nation will be viewed through three distinct lenses: culture, commerce, and the political economy. The end goal is to identify the very different, yet attractive opportunities that each country presents for an American firm wanting to expand their business. The IB 2509 course provides a unique opportunity to students with an interest in consulting, international business or social entrepreneurship
