Course Description

A Global Immersion is a concise, practice-based experience abroad whereby students learn about business from a comparative global perspective led by an experienced Fox faculty member as part of a customized 3-credit course offered in the spring or fall semester. Among many other benefits, students who participate in a Global Immersion course take away valuable skills in cross-cultural business understanding, learn about unique entrepreneurial environments, and understand distinct governance and institutional practices across global business environments. This initiative continues the push by Fox to expand our global footprint and to give our students the tools that they need to excel in the increasingly global marketplace.

The 2019 courses/locations/semesters we are offering are:

Summer 2019: FIN 5180: FINTech (Special Topics) with Dr. Bora Ozkan to London, England (June 30 - July 6, 2019)

Course Description:

As part of the FIN 5180 course in Summer 2019, the Fox International Programs office is excited to offer a short-term global immersion to London, England in June/July 2019. Students will travel to London from June 30 through July 6, 2019 for a week-long experience focusing on technology innovations effecting the financial sector. This immersion is a required component of the 3-credit FIN 5180 course in Summer 2019.

Finance meets technology; FinTech means state-of-the-art technology innovations effecting the financial sector. These innovations threaten the old business model and offer new business opportunities for people who are not behind this curve. Some of the recent examples of innovations in FinTech world are Blockchain and crypto currencies, robo-advisories, AI (artificial intelligence), IoT (internet of things) and mobile payment systems.

The City of London’s role as the beating heart of global financial markets has been established over decades and remains intact despite fierce international competition and globalization. The recent March ’18 edition of commercial think tank Z/Yen’s Global Financial Centers Index again placed London in first spot, just ahead of New York. Rankings are based on business environment, human capital, infrastructure, financial sector development and reputation. Increasingly central to London maintaining its influence as an international financial hub into the future is the City’s status as a hotbed incubator of FinTech.
