Course Description

A Global Immersion is a concise, practice-based experience abroad whereby students learn about business from a comparative global perspective led by an experienced Fox faculty member as part of a customized 3-credit course offered in the spring or fall semester. Among many other benefits, students who participate in a Global Immersion course take away valuable skills in cross-cultural business understanding, learn about unique entrepreneurial environments, and understand distinct governance and institutional practices across global business environments. This initiative continues the push by Fox to expand our global footprint and to give our students the tools that they need to excel in the increasingly global marketplace.

Course Description:

Special Topics Course: Doing Business in Cuba (LGLS 5170/SGM 5170, 3-credit online elective in Spring 2020)

A long history of often dramatic political turmoil between the United States and Cuba has left the island largely underdeveloped and interested U.S. firms largely frustrated. Yet despite this tense and often restrictive environment, ordinary Cubans are no strangers to entrepreneurship, and foreign firms are finding ways onto the Cuban market. This course will examine how businesses survive and flourish in a market like this and what makes Cuba attractive for foreign investment.

Students will compare and contrast the regulatory environment of Cuba to that of the United States in order to judge effectiveness, viability, and the relationship between that environment and business growth. Students will also take into account the many fluctuations in relations between Cuba, the United States, and the rest of the global economy. Students who complete this class can expect to be better informed about the array of public policy issues affecting businesses in distinct cultural and regulatory environments and how each can be beneficial or harmful to business development and investment.
