Course Description

THE SCIENCE OF UNCERTAINTY, RANDOMNESS, AND RISK

Sandy Catz
Wednesdays, 1:30 PM-3:00 PM
Nov. 3-Dec. 8 | Session 2

Ideas presented in this course are drawn from science, philosophy, economics, and the arts. Some of the issues we will explore: how we perceive and cope with randomness, disorder and chaos; seeking certainty in an age of anxiety; the rise of populism and the decline of confidence in science and government; how behavioral economics and neuroscience explain heuristics, bias, and irrationality; risk aversion, insurance, and how we are fooled by randomness; how science is driven by ignorance, complexity, and randomness, not a quest for truth and certainty.
