AN INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE FILM
Louis Friedler
4-Week Course
Thursdays, June 3-24, 1:30 PM-3:00 PM
This class will use film to introduce students to China and its changing values. We will discuss the films’ themes and how the directors advance them visually. The films are Eat Drink Man Woman, directed by Ang Lee; Raise the Red Lantern, by Zhang Yimou; Let the Bullets Fly, by Jiang Wen; and Mountains May Depart, by Jia Zhangke. The directors are among the most widely respected Chinese directors of the last 30 years, and the films are social commentaries. You will benefit by watching the films before each class. All the films are available for rental on Prime Video for a charge of less than $5 and may be available free there or from other sources with

Notes

Why when I'm registering do I join the wait list?
Several of our courses are in high demand. In order to accommodate our members who are not tech-savvy and have trouble registering online-we created a registration system in which there is no advantage to registering early, no disadvantage to registering later. When you register, you join the wait list for the course. After the registration period is over, we run a lottery on the courses, and it randomly determines who is admitted to each course and who is not. You typically receive word about which courses you are admitted to, two weeks before the start of the semester.

When will I be notified which classes I have been admitted to?
We typically notify our members about which courses they are admitted to at least two weeks before the semester starts.
