Course Description

ONLINE PRIVACY IS A MYTH: THE WEB CAN BE ORWELLIAN
Nancy McDonald

4 week class - March 10 - March 31
Wednesdays, 10:00 AM-11:30 AM
Although your online username may not be your real name, you are not anonymous on the web. Internet companies can identify and track you online. Plus, location tracking on smartphones creates a history of your physical movements, and fitness trackers send personal health information to tech companies. Data brokers aggregate this information, and government agencies are purchasing these databases. Instead of online anonymity, rock star Sting’s lyrical refrain “I’ll be watching you” is more apropos of today’s Internet.
