Course Description

For single tooth replacement in the maxillary anterior, there is convincing evidence that implant-supported restorations will lead to successful treatment outcomes if hard and soft tissues at the adjacent natural teeth are intact and guidelines for correct 3-dimensional implant placement according to restorative prerequisites for these indications are properly followed.  In contrast, achieving an esthetically optimal result when replacing multiple adjacent missing teeth in the anterior maxilla with fixed implant restorations is not as predictable. A major problem lies in the fact that vertical as well as horizontal bone and soft tissue volume in the affected area are often deficient. In the presence of such deficiences, hard and/or soft tissue augmentation procedures are required. While the efficacy and predictability of horizontal augmentation procedures is high, vertical ridge augmentation including the replacement of missing inter-implant papillae with biological means has a high level of unpredictability, and the use of pink ceramic must be considered.  This presentation will give particular emphasis to careful pre-operative evaluation, assessment of risk factors, and treatment planning in these complex indications. Surgical and prosthodontic proce-dures will be discussed on hand of clinical cases. Complications of various etiologies will be highlighted, and suggestions made on how to avoid them.

Learner Outcomes
