Course Description

This course will look at themes that relate to Japan past and present.  Unifying this overview is the idea of landscape from remote rural mountain villages to coastal towns, to rapidly growing cities.   There will also be a discussion of Japan's strong horticultural tradition and the connection between seasonality and display of plants.  The unique Japanese aesthetic provides a connection between the force of tradition and the spread of modernity.
