Instructor: Christine MacArthur
Dates: Mondays, Oct 2-Nov 27
No Class: Nov 20
Time: 1:00 PM-2:30 PM
Location: Hybrid at Center City (

Shakespeare was a genius in capturing the nuances of human behavior, whether comic or tragic. He is still performed today because he continues to speak to us. Many people are intimidated though by his language. Proposed is a course to make learning his language fun. We will learn about Shakespeare’s life, his times and his unique talent writing verse and prose. We will start with the monologues in historical order. We will learn a bit about the meter, the language, how to interpret it, and when you are ready, we will each take a stab at performing. There will be no stress in this class. You can sit in your chair and read your monologue, you may do what you feel comfortable with. If you don’t want to read that day, fine. No memorization is required. We can also look at the sonnets and at famous scenes as everyone gets more comfortable acting Shakespeare.

Notes

Why when I’m registering do I join the Wait List?
Several of our courses are in high demand. In order to accommodate our members who are not tech-savvy and have trouble registering online, we created a registration system in which there is no advantage to registering early, no disadvantage to registering later.

When registering, you join the Wait List for each course. Don’t be alarmed. This does not mean the course is full. After the registration period is over, we run a lottery on the courses, and it randomly determines who is admitted to each course and who is not. You typically will receive notification regarding which courses you are admitted to, about two weeks before the start of the semester. If a course accepts 150 or more students, you are very likely to get into it.
