Religion and the Constitution

In this course we will learn about the provisions in the First Amendment to the Constitution that bar laws that either establish religion or prohibit the free exercise of religion. We will discuss what happens when the establishment of religion prohibition comes into conflict with the free exercise provision and what happens when those provisions come into conflict with other laws such as laws regarding drugs, precluding gender identity discrimination, or providing directly or indirectly, for religious schools or for monuments embodying religious language or symbols.

Instructor’s Bio:

Alan Gershenson, BA, Penn State University; JD, Harvard Law School. Alan practiced law for 42 years, of which 36 were at the law firm of Blank Rome, where he was engaged entirely in civil trial work. His cases resulted in many trial and appellate decisions. He has taught and written about various aspects of commercial trial practice.

Why when I’m registering do I join the Wait List?
Several of our courses are in high demand. In order to accommodate our members who are not tech-savvy and have trouble registering online, we created a registration system in which there is no advantage to registering early, no disadvantage to registering later.

When registering, you join the Wait List for each course. Don’t be alarmed. This does not mean the course is full. After the registration period is over, we run a lottery on the courses, and it randomly determines who is admitted to each course and who is not. You typically will receive notification regarding which courses you are admitted to, about two weeks before the start of the semester. If a course accepts 150 or more students, you are very likely to get into it.
