If you have completed three classes of Spanish at OLLI (or if you have acquired the equivalent knowledge elsewhere), you may be interested in this contrastive introduction to Portuguese, a language with many similarities to (and differences from) Spanish. The textbook, Dover Publications paperback Essential Portuguese Grammar, by A.D.R. Prista, will be supplemented by handouts and exercises distributed by the instructor. Please purchase the textbook from your preferred vendor before the first class.

Instructor’s Bio:
Paul C. Smith, PhD, Romance Languages, UC Berkeley, BA, University of Pennsylvania. Paul was a professor for more than 30 years in the UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese. He first traveled to Portugal while a graduate student in Spain in 1957. He has since visited Portugal at least 20 times, most recently in May, 2023.Notes
Why when I’m registering do I join the Wait List?
Several of our courses are in high demand. In order to accommodate our members who are not tech-savvy and have trouble registering online, we created a registration system in which there is no advantage to registering early, no disadvantage to registering later.
When registering, you join the Wait List for each course. Don’t be alarmed. This does not mean the course is full. After the registration period is over, we run a lottery on the courses, and it randomly determines who is admitted to each course and who is not. You typically will receive notification regarding which courses you are admitted to, about two weeks before the start of the semester. If a course accepts 150 or more students, you are very likely to get into it.
