Course Description
Training Objectives
Attendance at this training will afford the participant the ability to:
- Implement basic skills for writing clear, concise and comprehensive field notes.
- Describe observed injuries accurately.
- Develop comprehensive skills to review their own as well as others’ notes for quality.
- Demonstrate the skills necessary to effectively interview while taking adequate field notes.
Training Outline
- Importance of quality field notes (1 hour)
This session will utilize activity and discussion to demonstrate the value and importance of writing quality field notes. Participants will also discuss the barriers that are faced when writing notes. These barriers will be revisited throughout the training in order to provide participants tips to address anything that gets in the way of good documentation.
- Standards of Quality Field Notes (2 hours)
Participants will be provided guidelines and practices for taking quality field notes. This interactive lecture will utilize numerous examples to illustrate each key point. These principles of effective note taking come from the current literature on investigative note taking.
- Documenting the Environment (1 hour)
This activity will challenge participants to use the principles provided in the previous section to effectively describe environmental conditions from a variety of settings.
D.Field Notes for Wounds and Injuries
This interactive lecture and activity will assist participants on how to properly identify and document frequent wounds and injuries that are seen during the course of an investigation. A tip sheet has been developed and will be provided to participants to help them better understand correct medical terminology.
E.Interviewing
One of the most challenging aspects of taking field notes is during an interview. This session will discuss the use of field notes during an interview and how to take them without interfering with effective interviewing skills.
