Course Description

This 4-hour live virtual training will refresh and review critical elements of the Older Adults Protective Services statute and regulations, including documentation, definitions, facility investigations, voluntary and mandatory reporting, and notifications.

The training is required for any staff person involved in protective services five years after attending Basic Protective Services training, and every five years thereafter. This includes but is not limited to:

  • All full-time or part-time protective services workers
  • Back-up protective services workers
  • Stand-by protective services workers
  • On-call protective services workers
  • Protective services supervisors
  • Back-up protective services supervisors
  • Agency administrators that participate in the program either as backup investigators, supervisors, or clinical advisors

 

Registration

  • Individual online registration is required for each person
  • This course is for older adults protective services (OAPS) staff and is not available to the public.

 

Course Outline

A. Review of documentation requirements and protective services criteria (1.25)

This session includes a review of documentation requirements. Protective services criteria will be reviewed. Participants will discuss imminent risk and incapacity scenarios.

B. Review and discussion of the regulatory requirements for completing an investigation. (1.25)

This session will provide a review of the actions required for both substantiated and unsubstantiated investigations. Assessment, service plans, reassessment, case management, and termination notification will be reviewed. Regulations will be referenced.

C. Analysis of the regulatory components of voluntary and mandatory reporting and facility investigations (1.50)

This review includes a discussion of the regulatory requirements for voluntary and mandatory reporting by facilities. Area Agency on Aging responsibilities for notifications and investigations in facilities will be discussed. Plans of supervision will be discussed and a plan of supervision case scenario will be examined.

 

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will have the ability to: 

  1. Describe investigation requirements.
  2. Describe the five criteria for protective services. 
  3. Explain mandatory and voluntary reporting. 
  4. List the requirements for facility investigations.

Details

  • This training will be instructed live via Zoom and is combined with reading materials and assignments
  •  The Zoom meeting link will be sent one week prior to the training
  • All participants will be required to have the following technology to join:
    • Zoom Meeting access 
    • a web camera turned on for the entire training and positioned so the instructor can see the participant's full face on the screen
    • a computer microphone and speakers turned on for the entire training
  • Attendees must be on time, participate, and attend the entire training for credit
  • A certificate will be issued for Protective Services credit hours upon completion of the requirements and the live training
  • Participants may not be in transit for the duration of the training

This training is approved for 4.0 (four) continuing education hours by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal
