Course Description

Play Therapy Techniques 
This course provides an understanding of the essential elements and principles of several primary techniques of conducting and evaluating play therapy including filial therapy, family play therapy and group play therapy.  An experiential component will focus on play therapy techniques and skill development within the context of ethical and diversity sensitive practice. The content will contain materials to develop play therapy practice skills and an understanding of in depth approaches of play therapy at the level required for eventual registration as a play therapist.

Post Graduate Certificate in Play Therapy Program Details

  • Application submission and acceptance required prior to registering for any course
  • 5 Courses are offered in the complete certificate program (see titles under Notes)
  • Classes are from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, with a one hour break for lunch

This course will meet 7 times, on selected Saturdays in the Fall 2018 semester.

Learner Outcomes

At the completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the theorists and history involved in several primary techniques of play therapy including family play therapy, filial therapy, and group play therapy.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to assess a preventing situation and recognize which technique(s) would be most effective.
  3. Demonstrate how to structure a play therapy session based on the different play therapy techniques discussed.
  4. Demonstrate play therapy skills involved in facilitating each of these play therapy techniques.
  5. Practice offering feedback to clients using these techniques (family, filial, and group sessions).
  6. Present and discuss a case study including a child’s presenting problems and how to use play therapy techniques of family, filial, and group play therapy to address treatment issues.
  7. Differentially select and use play therapy techniques to conduct multi-culturally appropriate evidence-based interventions to effect change.
  8. Understand issues of diversity, ethical considerations, and applications to special populations in using the play therapy techniques of family, filial, and group play therapy.

Notes

Cancellation and Refund Policy: 

All cancellation requests must be in writing via email to Pamela Vierra at pamela.vierra@temple.edu

  1. Cancellation of one individual course: cancellations received up to ten (10) business days prior to the start of the scheduled session will receive a full refund. If cancellation is received nine (9) business days to the first day prior to the start of the session there will be a $10.00 processing fee assessed, and the balance paid will be refunded. There will be no refunds if cancellation is the first day of the session or once the session has started.
  2. Cancellation of the entire certificate program: cancellations received up to ten (10) business days prior to the start of the scheduled session will receive a full refund. If cancellation is received nine (9) business days to the first day prior to the start of the session there will be a $50.00 processing fee assessed, and the balance paid will be refunded. 
Weather-Related Cancellations: In the event of inclement weather, TUH will make every effort to cancel events with as much advance notice as possible. Notification will be sent via email/DestinyOne once a decision to close or delay has been made. In all instances, TUH will follow the University’s and/or the agency’s cancellation decisions.

 

Continuing Education:

Each course within the Play Therapy program has been approved for 63 Play Therapy continuing education hours. Temple University Harrisburg is an APT Approved Provider #07-206. These credit hours satisfy the requirements for RPT/ RPTS credential and/or credential renewal.  Play Therapy credit may not be awarded to non-mental health professionals.

Temple University Harrisburg is an Association for Play Therapy (APT) (Approved Provider #07-206).  Each course within the Post-Graduate Certificate in Play Therapy program has been approved for 35 continuing education hours (CE's) through Temple University Harrisburg, a Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors pre-approved provider of continuing education. These credit hours satisfy the requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal. Temple University Harrisburg is also a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors. 

Certificates of attendance documenting continuing education hours will be issued by Temple University Harrisburg.

Prerequisites

This course is available to students who have been accepted into the certificate program via application process for Introduction to Play Therapy

Minimum requirement: Bachelors Degree, and related career experience; or Masters degree in a related field.
