Psychosocial Needs of the Older Adult Population and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
The goal of this workshop is to meet the needs of mental health professionals who are caring for an array of patients and issues in practice. The first part of the session will address the changing psychosocial needs of geriatric patients. The second half will include information on Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) following exposure to traumatic events and its relationship to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Learner Outcomes
As a result of attending the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify a sociological perspective of baby boomer population
- Assess a number of psychosocial needs of the older adult population including but not limited to spiritual, financial and sexual.
- Identify, analyze, and assess common mental and neurological health-related issues such as depression, dementia, anxiety, suicidality, and bipolar disorder.
- Identify Community Resources for the older adult population
- Describe current criticisms of CISD
- Describe how PTSD develops
- Differentiate between preventative measures and treatment of PTSD
- List alternate models being used in PTSD prevention.
