Course Description
Join Temple University Harrisburg on an exciting seven day trip to explore the education and human service system in Cuba; accompanied by an experienced English-speaking guide. This is the 3rd excursion to Cuba arranged by Temple University Harrisburg for professionals. The purpose of the trip will be to explore the Cuban education and human services systems. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit a variety of communities, including Havana and Santa Clara, schools and agencies, talk with human service professionals and experience Cuban culture and cuisine.
Due to its political history, Cuba’s systems of education and human services have evolved differently from the American systems. Cuba has been undergoing a transformation since the end of its isolation from the United States, a transformation that has brought both good things and challenges to the country. This opportunity will provide attendees with a unique experience to observe and learn about this fascinating culture and country. This is an incomparable trip you won’t want to miss!
Course Outline
Join a seven day professional development trip to Republica de Cuba
February 27 - March 5, 2016
Activities include:
Visits to the cities of Havana and Santa Clara
English speaking guide to accompany group throughout the trip
Visits to primary, secondary and technical schools
Discussion of Literacy Campaign at National Literacy Museum
Visit to the Instituto Superior Pedagogico Enrique Jose Varona
Exchange on preparation of teachers in Cuba, current perspectives
Visit Las Terrazas eco-social Project - A tour of the town and the surroundings with an explanation of the educational facilities
Visit with a local Committee for Defense of the Revolution (CDR) neighborhood group
Visit to CENESEX, the Cuban National Center for Sex Education - meeting with staff about both sex education and the work the Center is doing on gender issues
Discussion with specialists from the Ministry of Education on today's challenges to education in Cuba
Return air between Miami and Havana including exit tax in Miami and in Havana
Transportation by air conditioned bus for for all excursions and scheduled activities in cities and provinces
The trip is being evaluated for Act 48 and social work continuing education credits
Cost: $2,807.00 per person for double accommodations
