Course Description

This seminar provides an overview of the DSM-5, including a critical examination of the empirical evidence that undergirds the diagnoses in the DSM-5. This course will look at research studies and the empirical evidence that support the diagnoses in the DSM-5. The various chapters/sections of the DSM-5 will be explicated with highlights on the most common occurring diagnoses. A critical analysis of the strengths and limitations of the DSM-5 will also be discussed.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Describe the sections of the DSM-5; 
  • Identify the strengths and limitations of the DSM; and 
  • List the most common disorders. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:  

  • Recognize potential “disorders” in individuals; and 
  • Develop more effective interventions for their clients via an enhanced synthesis of their knowledge of the DSM-5.
