Course Description

Exposure to trauma affects human development across the life span, including our attachment to other individuals. This course reviews the prevalence of different types of trauma, including but not limited to: abuse and neglect, natural disasters, historical and racial trauma, bullying, and community violence. Theories of human development are examined from a trauma perspective, focusing on the importance of assessing individuals’ biological, psychological, social, and cultural lives as we work together.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify three ways in which experiences of trauma impact development across the life span; 
  • Recall each of the types of early childhood attachment and the implications of trauma upon attachment and relational development across the life span; and 
  • Compare and contrast how traumatic and non-traumatic memories are stored in our bodies. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:  

  • Critically assess how/if current assessments incorporate current knowledge of the relationship between trauma and human development; and 
  • Employ a trauma-informed bio-psycho-social assessment.
