Course Description

This course builds on the material covered in the Human Trafficking “101” course. It is designed to take a “deeper dive” into how to combat human trafficking (HT) as a bystander or professional in the healthcare, legal, and social service settings. This course will expand participants’ knowledge around Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the effects of trauma. Lastly, this course will explore local resources, including programs, eligibility, and referral processes. It will give service providers with the tools to understand how to screen for HT in medical, legal, and social service settings, as well as how to identify survivors; apply knowledge of ACEs and trauma when working with survivors of HT; and identify and utilize local HT resources, including program overview and eligibility requirements, screening tools, and referral and intake processes.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Increase knowledge about screening for human trafficking in social service settings and how to make appropriate referrals; 
  • Screen for red flags of human trafficking in the medical field, as well as how to build partnerships for cross-sector collaboration; and 
  • Identify local resources and program eligibility guidelines for human trafficking victims. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:  

  • Utilize trauma-informed language and tools to apply sensitive screening skills that help identify human trafficking victims; and 
  • Utilize legal supports for human trafficking survivors, as well as local human trafficking initiatives in the criminal justice sector.
