John Banger

9:30 a.m.–11:00 a.m

How do you listen to jazz? We’ll begin with a discussion of what jazz is and what sets it apart from other musical art forms. We’ll look briefly at some of the common song forms used in jazz and then examine the structure of a typical jazz performance. We’ll focus on what to look for, what to listen to, and how to appreciate the different styles of individual musicians, as well as the various musical styles in jazz. A variety of audio and video examples will be used throughout the course. No musical knowledge or previous exposure to jazz is necessary. Come explore this exciting, uniquely American art form.
