French Immersion

The first four weeks, the class will meet in-person at different Center City venues (venues to be announced well in advance), to discuss not only current French news but also the influence of the French on the American Revolution as well as on the architecture and cuisine of the city. Whenever possible a knowledgeable French native will be present to engage the group. The second 6 weeks, we will hold a hybrid class at OLLI Center City and online and discuss important news events occurring in France and throughout the Francophone world, culled from online French newspapers, videos and podcasts. The acquisition of modern vocabulary is stressed throughout the course. Grammar and advanced syntax points will be kept to a minimum.
Pre-requisite: Ability to speak and understand conversational French.

Instructor’s Bio:

Lois Beck, MA in French Language and Literature from Boston University. Lois’ postgraduate work includes courses at McGill University in Montreal, the Sorbonne in Paris, and the University of Salamanca in Spain. She has taught French and Spanish at the Julia R. Masterman School and at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, as well as teaching privately and giving tours of historic Philadelphia in French.

Why when I’m registering do I join the Wait List?
Several of our courses are in high demand. In order to accommodate our members who are not tech-savvy and have trouble registering online, we created a registration system in which there is no advantage to registering early, no disadvantage to registering later.

When registering, you join the Wait List for each course. Don’t be alarmed. This does not mean the course is full. After the registration period is over, we run a lottery on the courses, and it randomly determines who is admitted to each course and who is not. You typically will receive notification regarding which courses you are admitted to, about two weeks before the start of the semester. If a course accepts 150 or more students, you are very likely to get into it.
