Course Description

Spy, Reporter, Sleuth: Women at Work (book discussion)

Join us as we read three veteran authors writing mysteries showcasing women at the work of detecting. We begin with Laura Lippman’s Maddy Schwartz, a stay-at-home sixties Baltimore housewife turned reporter, risking everything to solve the mystery of the Lady in the Lake. We follow with Kate Atkinson’s Juliet Armstrong, a young secretary summoned to spy on British Nazis in wartime London in Transcription. We conclude with Philadelphia writer Liz Moore's Long Bright River about a detective who has a personal interest in the Kensington opiod problem. The charm of these books is not just in the plotting and writing but in their depiction of women finding “a way to matter” through life-changing, life-threatening, work.
