Course Description

The Community Action Poverty Simulation is an experiential exercise designed to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income families. It is a simulation, not a game. The poverty simulation breaks down stereotypes by allowing participants to step into the real-life situations of others. Up to 88 participants assume the roles of low-income family members living on a limited budget. Each participant is assigned a new identity in one of 26 different families experiencing poverty. Together, family members and neighbors are given the challenge of providing for their basic necessities and shelter for one month. Participants will need to use the provided resources, their wit, and their creativity to make it through the month.
“In addition, about 26 volunteers — preferably people who have experienced poverty — play the roles of community resource providers in the community. This allows individuals who have firsthand knowledge of living in poverty to bring their perceptions to the exercise.”
