Course Description

Lace structures create translucency and serve as a filter of light and negative space. Lace covers and guards its owner while simultaneously allowing for a gaze through the cloth eroticizing, objectifying, and also empowering the person or thing on the other side. Loom controlled laces utilize systems of holes and spaces. In woven cloth, warp threads are anchored at both ends then crossed in straight lines by weft threads. In this class we will investigate patterns that manipulate that right angle, allowing threads to bend and curve once removed from the tension of the loom. Students will be introduced to processes including open weave, leno lace, and huck lace. Each student will have opportunity to make a sample of each process as well as complete one project of their choosing.
