Course Description
Course Description: This course will focus on deconstructing compulsive eating behaviors from a Biopsychosocial Perspective. Risk factors and vulnerabilities to compulsive behaviors will be discussed from a variety of perspectives. Education will be provided regarding food and the brain's reward pathway, the addictive qualities of certain foods, and Binge Eating Disorder. Preventative strategies will also be discussed.

Course Outline
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Introductions, icebreaker activity, learning objectives
9:30 AM – 10:15 AM: Lecture-compulsive eating, binge eating disorder, food addiction definitions, diagnostic criteria, behavioral feedback loop
10:15 AM – 10:30 AM: Group discussion-cases seen in practice
10:30 AM – 10:45 AM: Break
10:45 AM – 11:30 AM: Lecture/Group discussion-psychological, sociocultural factors of eating behaviors and food choice
11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Small group activity-variables affecting food choices
12:00 PM – 12:15 PM: Wrap-Up
Learner Outcomes
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define and apply understanding of the symptomatology of binge eating disorder and food addiction
- Compare and contrast binge eating and food addiction with other eating and addictive disorders
When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:
- Apply various etiological models to understand the causation of these behavioral patterns, specifically as they fall under the holistic BioPsychoSocialSpiritual model
- Assess for specific variables when treating a client with these issues
- Apply evidence-based treatment techniques to this population
