Course Description
Course Description: Grief and loss will touch everyone's world at some point. Grief can challenge an individual's sense of identity, roles, and self-worth while putting them at risk for increased depression and anxiety. This program will help social workers distinguish the type of grief being experienced, complications impacting the grief process, and possible interventions that can be effective in moving clients through the process.

Instructor Bio: Catherine Nakonetschny, MA, MSW, LCSW was born and raised in Philadelphia. She received a BA in Psychology and MA in counseling Psychology from Rosemont College. In 1999, she began working in the field of elder care in various nursing homes and with Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. In 2009, Catherine return to school to pursue her MSW and is a 2011 graduate of Temple University's School of Social Work. She currently works as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in a retirement community in New Jersey. In 2018, Catherine was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Rosemont College, for her work with the elderly and specifically in the realm of dementia care. Catherine has presented at several professional conferences, provides regular staff trainings, and written articles int he area of dementia care, grief, end of life care, and elder care. She currently resides in Delran, NJ with her husband Nick and twin sons Nicholas and Dimitrius.
Course Outline
1:00 PM - 1:15 PM: Introductions and Review of Objectives
1:15 PM – 1:45 PM: Basic Information on Grief -What is grief? The types of grief, and examples of uncommon types of grief
1:45 PM - 2:45 PM: Overview of the Models for Grief –Kubler-Ross, Worden, Rando, Bowlby, and Schupp
2:45 PM – 3:00 PM: BREAK
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Interventions for Healing – Looking at both traditional psychotherapy techniques and non-traditional techniques including letter writing, poetry and breath work. We will also look at special populations such as bereaved parents, survivor children etc.
4:00 PM - 4:15 PM: Questions and Answers
Learner Outcomes
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Determine the appropriate interventions to assist a client in acknowledging their grief and address complications impact that grief
- Identify appropriate resources for individuals experiencing traumatic grief
When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:
- Use a variety of traditional and non-traditional interventions to assist their client through the grief journey
- Assist clients in moving on with their lives by redefining roles, increasing sense of self-worth and repairing identity
- Utilize appropriate resources for individuals experiencing traumatic grief
