Course Description

 

NOTICE TO ALL PROTECTIVE SERVICE WORKERS:

Dear AAA Directors and/or PS Supervisors:  (Fri 03/20/2020 12:27 PM)

In order to maintain a safe environment for participants and training staff at Temple University Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) and the Institute on Protective Services (IPS) have decided to cancel all in-person protective services training until further notice. This includes basic training, enrichment training, supervisor training and solicitor training.

This email provides current details on the plans to allow for those working in protective services to meet their educational needs and requirements.

Enrichment training — For 2020, the revised and mandatory intake worker training will count as six hours of enrichment training. All IPS in-person enrichment trainings for the spring are cancelled. IPS will plan to resume offering in-person enrichment in September.

Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal.

Topic 1 – Case Walk-Through: Financial Exploitation
Instructor: Caroline Burnell

This six-hour face-to-face training is designed to provide guidance to protective services caseworkers when investigating for financial exploitation by providing hands-on experience in planning, performing, mitigating risk, and reporting on alleged financial exploitation.

Training Details:

  • This course has a prerequisite of 3 short readings and related questions estimated to take 1 hour total
  • Individual online registration is required for each person
  • 8:00 am Sign-in with the training time: 8:30 am to 4:10 pm - Please be prompt
  • This course is a classroom presentation only
  • Certificate issued for Protective Service credit hours upon completion
  • Partial certificate for late arrival or early departure is not available

Topic 2 –  Adults and Older Adults Who Self-Neglect: Enrichment Training for Protective Services

This training is provided as an enrichment course for Older Adults Protective Service Workers and Adult Protective Service Workers. The course covers the fundamentals of addressing the needs of individuals who self-neglect through protective services.

Topic 3 - Responding to Reports of Sexual Violence (STOP)
Instructors: Karen Galbraith, Tatiana Piper, Richard Albrecht

Responding to reports of sexual violence against older adults and adults with IDD requires a trauma-informed approach. This interactive, all-day training for investigators will provide an overview of specific considerations for these challenging investigations. 

This training is provided as an enrichment course for Older Adults Protective Service Workers and Adult Protective Service Workers.

Learner Outcomes

Topic 1 – Case Walk-Through: Financial Exploitation

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe financial exploitation and the two forms it can take
  2. Discuss questions you can ask an older adult to assess if they are a victim of financial exploitation
  3. List the effects financial exploitation may have on older adults
  4. Know when you need to request information from the bank
  5. Know what to request from the bank and its purpose
  6. Discuss the importance of red flags of financial exploitation and give specific examples of red flags observable in bank statements
  7. Relate the red flags identifiable in the bank statements to common methods of financial abuse
  8. Know what steps to take when reviewing bank information
  9. Discuss service planning and risk mitigation applicable to financial exploitation cases
  10. Write summary determination journal entries that provide the reader with a clear overview of the investigation

Topic 2 –  Adults and Older Adults Who Self-Neglect: Enrichment Training for Protective Services

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define self-neglect
  2. Assess self-neglect in the 5 domains
  3. Identify safety and risk reduction interventions for adults and older adults who are self-neglecting
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the framework for motivational interviewing
  5. Identify community partners to work within self-neglect cases

Topic 3 - Responding to Reports of Sexual Violence (STOP)

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the dynamics of sexual violence
  2. Describe what a Trauma-informed response is
  3. Explain a victim's behaviors and response
  4. Discuss the importance of a victim-centered approach
  5. Discuss strategies for working with people with communication needs
  6. List the resources available to victims of sexual violence
  7. Identify vicarious trauma
  8. Explain tips for self-care
