Course Description

The Expanding Hope Project: Motivational Interviewing for Health and Service Providers training offers a series of four training modules in Motivational Interviewing. MI is a proven approach to help support individuals who struggle with opioid use disorder and substance use disorder. MI is an evidence-based, collaborative conversation that is used to strengthen a person’s own motivation for and commitment to change.

HOW TO REGISTER:

All steps MUST be followed in order to register and access the required course materials.

  • Step 1: Register for Module 1, click on the box with course number HBGCE0091-001 and add to cart. Click Keep Shopping.
  • Step 2: Register for Module 4, click on the box with course number HBGCE0091-014 and add to cart. Click Keep Shopping.
  • Step 3: Register for TWO live, virtual sections (via Zoom) from the below options that best suit your date and location needs. Add these two selections to cart. See the list below for the Classroom selections.
    • Select one Module 2 
    • Select one Module 3 
  • Step 4: To complete the checkout process follow prompts until you receive a receipt page.
  • Step 5: Check your email inbox (or spam folder, if not in inbox) for further instructions. These instructions will provide step by step process for activating your TU AccessNet account. You will need to follow the steps in this email to access Canvas and the online courses you registered for in the Destiny One registration system. More About the Course…

Temple University Harrisburg, in partnership with the York Opioid Collaborative (YOC), received funding from the PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) to implement the Expanding Hope Project.

The purpose of this project is to provide evidence-based techniques in Motivational Interviewing to York, Lancaster and Philadelphia health and other service providers.

The goal of this project is to improve the knowledge and effectiveness among participants in MI specific techniques when encountering high-risk individuals with opioid use disorder and substance use disorder. The training is designed to be accessible, modular, scalable, and readily transferable for use in other communities with multiple audiences.

  • Address issues of problematic substance use?

 

Course Outline

This course is offered virtually. Participants must complete all four modules (ten hours of training) to receive continuing education hours.

  • Module 1: Online Canvas Module (1.5  hours) Why Motivational Interviewing for OUD and SUD?
  • Modules 2 & 3: Live Virtual Zoom Meetings (6 hours) Motivational Interviewing: Theory and Application for Change
  • Module 4: Online Canvas Module (2.5 hours) Bringing It All Together: Practicing for Proficiency

Modules 1 & 4 will be through Canvas, Temple University's learning platform for online courses. Once you have registered for the online learning sessions, you will receive an email to set up a user name and password (Temple AccessNet), which will give you access to the Canvas platform.

Modules 2 & 3 will be presented virtually through Zoom Meeting. Participants will be required to have the following technology to join the online course:

  • Zoom Meeting account (instructions will be sent to registered participants)
  • a web camera
  • a computer microphone and speakers

To successfully complete this course and be eligible to receive continuing education, all four modules must be completed in full and in the correct order. Completion of modules 1, 2 and 3 are required prior to starting and completing module 4.

Learner Outcomes

Module 1: Why Motivational Interviewing for OUD and SUD? (1.5 hrs)

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Recall three facts about the effects of opioids on the brain
  2. List four goals of Motivational Interviewing
  3. Summarize Motivational Interviewing and explain how it applies to your work with individuals with OUD and SUD
  4. Recall five stages of change;
  5. Apply five principles of Motivational Interviewing

Module 2 & 3: Motivational Interviewing: Theory and Application for Change (6 hrs)

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the Spirit, Principles, and Processes of MI
  2. Describe change talk and six questions for eliciting more of it
  3. Restate the four core skills (OARS) of MI
  4. Report an increased level of confidence in using MI

Module 4: Bringing It All Together: Practicing for Proficiency (2.5 hrs)

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply the four MI Processes
  2. Use the four OARS skills
  3. Demonstrate proficiency with the five DARES principles
  4. Recall the five stages of change
  5. Engage in change talk

This training series has been approved for 10 Social Work, Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB), or Act 48 continuing education hours. Each request will have a fee of $20.00 per CE type and requires payment upon check out.

Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB) Continuing Education:

  • This item must be paid for at check out. The continuing education certificate processing fee is $20.00.
  • This training series has been approved for *10 continuing education hours by the Pennsylvania Certification Board.

Certificates of attendance documenting continuing education hours will be issued by Temple University Harrisburg
