Learner Outcomes

Module 1: (1.5 hrs. on-line)

Why Motivational Interviewing for SUD and OUD?

This module is designed to understand the depth of the opioid crisis in your community while offering an opportunity to learn about the most up-to-date research on substance use disorders. It will introduce you to the change process that you may have experienced in your own life because you may have a personal story of change. Module 1 will help you create a path from external pressure to change to an internal desire for things to be different. The stages of change will be considered as a means of knowing how to “meet the client where they are at.”

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Recall three facts about the effects of opioids on the brain;
  2. List four goals of Motivational Interviewing;
  3. Summarize Motivational Interviewing and explain how it applies to your work with individuals with SUD and OUD;
  4. Recall five stages of change;
  5. Apply five principles of Motivational Interviewing.

Module 2 & 3: (6 hrs. in-person training)

Motivational Interviewing: Theory and Application for Change

Module 2 and 3 are designed for health and service providers who want to expand their knowledge and skill in MI. This training will bring MI to life through presentations, lecture, role-play interactions and other strategic activities that will transfer techniques, theories, style and spirit of MI to training participants to use with individuals who live with substance use disorders and opioid use disorder.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the Spirit, Principles, and Processes of MI.
  • Describe change talk and six questions for eliciting more of it.
  • Restate the four core skills (OARS) of MI.
  • Report an increased level of confidence in using MI.

Module 4: (2.5 hrs online)

Bringing It All Together: Practicing for Proficiency

Research shows that one of the most effective methods for learning MI is to obtain observation, coaching, and feedback on MI skills. The final on-line module will provide numerous opportunities to engage in the practice of MI. As you incorporate the skills and strategies into your day-to-day work, the effectiveness of MI becomes apparent.

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

• Apply the four MI Processes.

• Use the four OARS skills.

• Demonstrate proficiency with the five DARES principles.

• Recall the five stages of change.

• Engage in change talk.
