Course Description

Successful PhD students need to be not only competent in advanced statistical methods, but also proficient with data skills to be able to collect and prepare original datasets. Through the PhD Data Camp, PhD students will have familiarity with the craft of empirical research, the capability to develop research projects in later coursework, and the confidence to continue learning on their own to conceive of and complete ambitious research work. This camp will equip students with these skills through a combination of introductory lessons and application through group challenges:

  • Gain introductory skills to use Python to access data through APIs and webscraping
  • Manipulate data through the Pandas package
  • Construct new variables and analyses with network analysis, text analysis, and machine learning
  • Gain fundamental understanding of casual inference and research design to guide data plans
  • Brief introduction to other data resources available at the Fox School and Temple University
