Course Description

This international teaching experience, offered alongside the credit-bearing practicum for TESOL Masters students involves planning and leading classes, reading, discussion, and reflection. After two weeks of pre-travel sessions and a week of on-site orientation, curriculum development and training, students will teach a 4 week program designed to develop university students’ oral communication skills. Throughout the 4 weeks of teaching, the supervising TESOL faculty member will conduct formal and informal observations, meet individually with students to coach on classroom teaching, and lead bi-weekly seminars on topics pertinent, such as classroom community building, feedback, assessment, and teacher identity.  

Learner Outcomes

  • Identify, analyze, and apply current dominant theories of second language development and pedagogy to teaching adult ELLs in the IELP
  • Conduct independent and collaborative needs analyze of the students in their classes
  • Plan and deliver effective lessons
  • Reflect on and analyze the effectiveness of their teaching
  • Construct and employ valid, reliable, and useful on-going classroom assessments
  • Connect practicum experience with future professional goals
