Course Description

Business English will focus on the specialized language required for business communications. Students will develop skills by reading, listening to and summarizing business news items, reports, and company portfolios; write concise business correspondence; develop a business proposal; and deliver a professional presentation. They will also practice speaking skills needed in a business context such as negotiations, asking and responding to questions, supporting an argument, and understanding and using the language of meetings. Students will also prepare for and attend presentations by guest speakers, take part in activities related to American business culture, and visit local businesses. The course will conclude with a meeting in which students will present the proposals they have written.

Learner Outcomes

  • Listen to business-related videos, presentations, and information related to local business they will visit during their field excursions.
  • Students will analyze and discuss sample business proposals, articles on current trends in business, and information related to local business they will visit during their field excursions. They will also negotiate solutions to short business cases and present a proposal for a business-related topic relevant to their experience and interests.
