CST0002 - Summer Workshop on Computing and Statistics
Course Description
**WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR SUMMER 2020 DUE TO COVID-19**
A 2-week early summer workshop designed to orient students on professional scientific computing and statistical reasoning.
Who is invited:
- Primarily graduate students completing their first year and beginning research
- More senior graduate students looking to improve their knowledge
- Advanced undergraduates
- Active researchers looking to improve their computing skills
What attendees can expect:
- Breadth of knowledge in computing and statistics
- Practice in the topics covered
- Lecture notes as a central reference
- Exposure to advanced and current topics
- Connections to other students
- Exposure to other disciplines
- A certificate showing satisfactory performance/participation
Course Outline
Workshop Schedule
This program will run Monday through Friday, May 18, 2020, until May 29, 2020, not including Memorial Day (May 25th). There will be an optional day before the main workshop on Friday, May 15th held in its place. Each day will run from 1pm until 4pm, although the room will be available to students until 5pm if they wish to continue working.
Summary Schedule
Optional Day (Friday, May 15, 1-5pm): Introduction to Python
- A non-mandatory day focused on Python basics
Week 1 (May 18 - 22, 1-5pm): Programming Basics and Applications
• Scientific programming with Python, Git, and basic Unix commands.
• Each day will consist of ~2 hours of lecture (with breaks and interactivity)
• After lecture there will be open Coffee & Coding time
Week 2 (May 26-29, 1-5pm) no class on May 25: Statistics for Professional Scientists
• Professional statistics
• Bayesian statistics and common algorithms
• Error analysis
