Course Description

This course allows students to understand and critically analyze the social and academic culture of American Universities.  Students will constantly reflect on their personal experience and perspective of various topics of American university culture. Various articles, video resources, and discussion topics will challenge students to think beyond a superficial understanding of the life on a university campus. Through analyzing different aspects of life inside and outside of the classroom and by identifying student support services at Temple, students will be in a better position to understand how to interact with their peers and instructors as well as understand essential campus resources.

Learner Outcomes

  • Recognize differences in the types of American university cultures.
  • Interact with members of the university community according to norms of American university cultures.
  • Use appropriate communication conventions with a professor in writing and in person.
  • Follow common university classroom behavior and expectations.
  • Recognize common social interactions among students and react appropriately to them.
  • Identify various campus resources (health & wellness center, campus security) and know how they can assist international students.
