Course Description

Brief Course Description: Motivational interviewing has been demonstrated to be effective for common clinical mental health problems such as addiction, anxiety, depression, and dual diagnoses, as well as other unhealthy lifestyle and self-defeating behaviors.  This course will refresh participants on the principles and values of person-centered counseling and motivational interviewing approaches to be utilized within mental health treatment.  During this training, participants will learn and practice critical skills and techniques that assist clients with moving along the stages of change towards continuous and sustained action.

Part 1:

9:00 AM - 9:30 AM: Intros, icebreaker activity, learning objectives

9:30 AM - 10:00 AM: Person-Centered/Rogerian approaches; forming a therapeutic alliance [lecture presentation]

10:00 AM - 10:20 AM: Motivation, ambivalence & the Stages of change [small group activity]

10:20 AM - 10:35 AM: Break

10:35 AM - 11:00 AM: Spirit and Principles of Motivational Interviewing [lecture presentation]

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM: Techniques of Motivational Interviewing [video clips/discussion; lecture/presentation]

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM: Reflective Listening [dyad role play activity]

12:00 PM - 12:15 PM: Wrap-Up

 

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM: Lunch

 

Part 2:

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM: MI stage-based techniques [lecture presentation]

2:15 PM - 2:30 PM: Break

2:30 PM - 3:15 PM: Application of techniques across the stages of change [small group role-plays/process discussion]

3:15 PM - 3:45 PM: Reluctance, lack of readiness, and “resistance” [lecture presentation]

3:45 PM - 4:15 PM: Group discussion-best approaches to hard cases/Wrap-up

Learner Outcomes

Learner Outcomes:

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Identify the core principles and the spirit of Motivational Interviewing
  • Recognize the myriad applicaitons of Motivational Interviewing in mental health treatment

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to do the following:

  • Utilize intentional, effective communication strategies in order to assist clients in their process of change
  • Apply core principles and three (3) techniques of Motivational Interviewing (focusing on change talk, rolling with resistance, exploring ambivalence) to their work with clients

Notes

  • Pre-Approved Provider:  Temple University School of Social Work Continuing Education Program is a pre-approved provider of continuing education courses and programs for social workers and clinical social workers in Pennsylvania.
  • Continuing Education Certificates:  At the conclusion of the course, paper certificates denoting continuing education clock hours will be provided to students who successfully complete the course.  To successfully complete the course, students must attend the entire course (from start to finish), actively participate in the course, and submit a course evaluation form.  Note:  Certificates are printed 72 hours in advance of the scheduled course.  The Continuing Education Office will mail paper certificates within 14 calendar days of the course to any students who register after the certificates are printed.  Tuition for the course covers the cost of the paper certificate.
  • Accommodations:  To request special accommodations, please send an email to the Continuing Education program office (sswce@temple.edu) that includes a contact person, phone number, and specific accommodation requested.  Please provide at least 14 calendar day's notice before the scheduled course.
  • Cancellations/Refunds:  Please notify the Continuing Education program office (sswce@temple.edu) as soon as possible if you need to cancel your registration.  Registrants who provide more than 7 days' notice of cancellation receive 100% tuition refund.  Registrants who provide more than 24 hours' but less than 7 days' notice of cancellation receive 50% tuition refund.  Registrants who provide less than 24 hours' notice of cancellation receive 0% tuition refund.
