Course Description

Course Description:  This course will focus on the ethical values, conflicts, and dilemmas that exist in daily social work practice.  This course will utilize a variety of theoretical lenses to increase social workers' insights into ethics as it relates to social work practice, social justice, and service.  The course will include a critical examination of major ethical challenges that social workers face, particularly in direct practice.  The 3-hour course will also include a section on the importance of social work supervision and mentoring to address complicated ethical problems evoked in direct practice.

Learner Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Apply ethical principles from the NASW Code of Ethics (and other ethical theories and models) to daily social work practice
  • Critically analyze current value dilemmas and tensions in the field (including a focus on social justice issues involving vulnerable populations, human rights, multiculturalism, coerced treatment, managed care, mental illness, and violence)
  • Experience increased confidence in becoming a competent and ethically-informed practitioner

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior
  • Engage diversity and difference in practice
