Annual Philadelphia Flower Show Lecture with Jenny Rose Carey

Don Corleone’s vegetable garden in The Godfather. The small rose garden that plays a large role in Rear Window. The fantastic chocolate garden in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The horrific hedge maze in The Shining.

Gardens have provided the backdrops or been the centerpieces of immortal moments in cinema since earliest days of film. On Sunday, January 25, Jenny Rose Carey, former director of the Ambler Arboretum of Temple University, will present “Gardens of the World Through Movies,” exploring some of the most significant gardens in film.

This lecture, which is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), is free and open to the public. PHS will celebrate the magic of the movies with “Lights, Camera, Bloom” at the 2015 Philadelphia Flower Show from Saturday, February 28 through Sunday, March 8.

While at the Flower Show, be sure to visit Temple University Ambler’s exhibit, “Star Power: Casts of Light that Stir and Spellbind,” presented by the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture.

Star Power takes its inspirations from the source of light used in early motion pictures — the sun — then fast-forwards to the modern day. The exhibit illustrates why filmmakers choose to shoot outdoors at two specific times of day — the blue and magic hours of sunset and sunrise. Temple University’s 2015 exhibit captures both through beauty action and illusions!
