Course Description

Clinical supervisors play a vital role in guiding the development, professional identity, ethical competence, and effectiveness of graduate and post-graduate practitioners. Yet, many step into this role with little to no formal training in clinical supervision as a distinct practice. While clinical supervision shares parallels with direct clinical work, it is a specialized discipline in its own right. Both supervisors and supervisees benefit from continued education in this area, ensuring more effective mentorship, ethical oversight, and professional growth.

Who Should Enroll:
This course is designed for professionals in the mental health and social services fields who are currently in—or preparing for—clinical supervisory roles. Ideal participants include those with a master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling, as well as individuals holding licenses such as:
     - LSW (Licensed Social Worker)
     - LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)
     - LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor)
     - LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist)
Whether you’re newly licensed or an experienced clinician looking to expand your supervisory skills, this training offers essential knowledge grounded in current best practices.

Course Outline

1. Foundations and Theories of Supervision (2.5 hours; asynchronous learning)
2. Models and Processes of Supervision (2.5 hours; asynchronous learning)
3. Ethics in Supervision (3 hours; asynchronous learning)
4. Group Supervision (2 hours; asynchronous learning)
5. Regulations, Contracting and Documentation (1 hour; asynchronous learning)
6. Virtual Workshop Dates: Introductory Session: Tuesday, May 5, 2026, June 16, 2026 and June 23, 2026.

Certificate Requirements
1) Must complete and pass all five (5) asynchronous courses:

• All courses require a minimum quiz grade of 80% or higher to pass.
• All courses require successful completion of course assignments to pass.
• Attempts to re-submit assignments for at least an 80% passing grade will be coordinated by the instructor and the participant.
• Participants have 2 opportunities to pass the quiz to receive a certificate of completion/CEs for each asynchronous course.             

2) Must successfully complete and pass the virtual instructor-led course with a grade of 80% or higher.

3) Asynchronous course content must be completed and passed in order to progress to the virtual instructor-led sessions.  All asynchronous content must be completed/passed by Monday, June 15, 2026.

Learner Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the ability to navigate ethical dilemmas, legal responsibilities, and professional codes of conduct within individual and group supervision settings, including boundary-setting, confidentiality, documentation, and cultural competence.
2. Analyze and apply key supervision models—including Psychodynamic, Developmental, Integrative, and group-based approaches—while articulating a personal philosophy of supervision grounded in theory, ethics, and reflective practice.
3. Facilitate effective supervisory relationships through clear communication, experiential learning, collaborative problem-solving, interprofessional coordination, and evidence-based techniques to support supervisee growth and accountability.

Notes

Continuing Education Units and Social Work Continuing Education Hours

• This certificate course has been approved for 0.15 CEU's and 15 Social Work Continuing Education hours (10 hours home study) by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal. Certificates of attendance documenting continuing education hours or units will be issued by TUH. Each participant must submit a request for these points to be awarded.

Cancellation Policy

• All cancellation requests MUST be received within 72 hours (3 business days) from the start date of the course AND the registered person has not accessed any portion of the online courses in Canvas.
• All cancellation requests must be in writing via email to Rebecca Bieber at rebecca.bieber@temple.edu and received by the Temple University Harrisburg staff before becoming effective. **Please note: If a cancellation request is not made and the registrant does not attend the course as originally scheduled, the registrant is still responsible for payment for the scheduled course.
• Cancellations that meet the criteria listed above will be eligible for a full refund of fees paid.
