Course Description

This flexible certificate program provides supervisors, managers, directors and emerging leaders with an opportunity to learn and practice skills in developing successful proposals to obtain external funding. The Grant Writing Certificate Program will cover the basics of grant seeking and writing, enabling anyone with an interest in the topic to get started on the grant writing process. 


Course Outline

Times: This program will be offered at two different times. There is a morning session or an evening session. Participants must choose a session and cannot switch classes due to limited class capacity. 

  • Morning Sessions: 9:00 am - 11:30 am


  • Evening Sessions: 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Module 1 - How to Get Started

Module 2 - Basic Elements of Grants and Grant Writing

Module 3 - Building Your Organization's Capacity and Building a Program Design

Module 4 - Finding Potential Funders and How to Build a Budget

Module 5 - Evaluation Plans and Strategies

Module 6 - Grant Writing Reality Check, Pulling a Final Proposal Together

Assignments: Participants will be asked to complete exercises that will assist in meeting the learning outcomes. Participants will be encouraged to complete a grant application in response to either a grantor’s Request for Proposal or their published application guidelines for a proposal. Participants will be given feedback on their proposals.


Learner Outcomes

 After completing the modules, participants will be familiar with the steps of the grant writing process and have basic knowledge about the types of grants available and how to look for them. This certificate program is beneficial for anyone who is interested in grant writing but is not sure how to get started. It will also help experienced academic researchers, nonprofit organizations, and freelance writers to write grants more confidently and improve their grant-writing game.



Certificate Requirements:  To earn the certificate, participants must attend and complete the required assignments for all six modules. All participants will be encouraged to complete a grant application in response to either a grantor’s Request for Proposal or their published application guidelines for a proposal. Participants who elect to submit a proposal will be given feedback.

Cancellation Policy: There are no refunds for eLearning courses

Continuing Education Units and Social Work Continuing Education Hours:

This program has been approved for 1.5 CEU's and 15 Social Work Continuing Education hours, three of which fulfill the ethics requirement by the state licensing board. Temple University Harrisburg is a PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors preapproved provider of continuing education. These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal. 

Certificates of attendance documenting continuing education hours or units will be issued by Temple University Harrisburg.

If you are interested in receiving a certificate of continuing education, the following steps must be completed:

  1. View and complete the CE Request Form indicating either a request for social work CE or CEU's
  2. Attend and sign the attendance roster for all six modules
  3. Complete an online program evaluation at the end of the six weeks
