Course Description

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have sexuality related needs, desires, and concerns that can occur throughout their lifespan.  Loved ones and interdisciplinary support staff provide a variety of opportunities for daily living, often connected to a person’s sexuality.  It is critical that loved ones and caregiving staff become familiar with ways to support a person’s healthy sexual growth and safety in social situations and relationships with others.  In this session, we will present the holistic model of sexuality to facilitate understanding of the sexuality related needs, desires, and concerns such as risk for sexual violence and other forms of abuse that may be experienced throughout a person’s lifespan.  We will also discuss the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in supporting a person’s sexuality.
