Course Description

This course will prepare the addiction and mental health practitioner with accurately recognizing, assessing, and treating individuals who identify as LGBTQIA who are struggling with substance abuse and related problems. Special attention will be paid to comprehension of sexuality self-identifier terms, culturally-specific risk and etiological factors, and evidence-based culturally-competent treatment considerations.

Course Schedule

1:00-1:15: Intros, learning objectives

1:15-2:00: Lecture- LGBTQIA risk factors for substance abuse, epidemiology, intercultural factors

2:00-2:45: Sub-cultural psychosocial risk factors for addiction- lesbian women, gay men, bisexuals, queer and genderqueer individuals, transfolk

2:45-3:30 Group activity- Case conceptualization, breakdown of clinical and cultural variables

3:30-4:00: Lecture/discussion- addt’l counseling, clinical, and agency considerations; Wrap-up

Learner Outcomes

Learners will be able to

A. Understand the epidemiology and risk factors of substance abuse among the LGBTQIA population.

B. Identify key terms and substance use trends in the LGBTQIA population.

C. Understand the characteristics and life experiences of LGBTQIA individuals and how they connect and correlate to substance use and abuse.

D. Develop and utilize culturally-competent practices to assist LGBTQIA clients with resolving problems and challenges that compromise their recovery.
