Fighting Fat: Causes, consequences and strategies for addressing childhood obesity

Course Description

Childhood obesity is a public health crisis and rates of children with overweight and obesity have increased significantly. Children in vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected and addressing this multifaceted issue is challenging. It is important that care providers learn more about this problem in order to help deliver solutions. This course will provide an overview of the etiology of childhood obesity and examine the complex factors that influence child weight status. Genetic, interpersonal, and environmental factors will be explored and the physiological and psychosocial consequences of overweight and obesity will be presented. Factors associated with child weight status, including diet and physical activity, will be also discussed to provide context to the development of overweight and obesity in children. Participants will learn strategies for addressing issues related to child weight including language and terminology to describe and discuss challenges related to child weight, and how to communicate with parents about child health behaviors. Additionally, participants will think about how to assess environments to identify factors that can promote or prevent positive health behaviors in at-risk children.

  • Describe the physiological and psychosocial consequences of childhood obesity.
  • Identify strategies for addressing childhood obesity within the scope of social work practice.
