Course Description

Course Description:  In the United States most individuals will have some interaction with the health care system across their life span for treatment of an acute or chronic illness.  As social workers, we should have basic knowledge of the health care system, advocacy skills to effectively interact with health care providers, and navigation skills to assist clients in their movement through the health care system.  The multi-level impact of acute and chronic disease on the quality of life of individuals and families is significant.  In this course we will discuss the history of social work and other health professions in addressing illness and disease in different settings.  We will also explore the variety of settings that social workers are employed in and best practices of working as a member of multidisciplinary teams.  We will further address working with individuals and families who are facing end-of-life issues.
